how to sell on offerup

Do you have unwanted things that you want to sell? Many people want to make extra cash. One way that you can do that is to get rid of your old stuff. In this day and age, you don’t have to have a yard sale to make money. There are many apps and websites designed for selling items. One that has gotten popular over the years is OfferUp. Today, I’ll be going over how to sell on OfferUp.

What is OfferUp?

OfferUp is a free online marketplace that allows you to sell different items. It’s similar to other selling apps out there. With OfferUp, there’s no bidding process. You are paid in cash. You also have the option to meet potential buyers in person, or you can ship the item to them. OfferUp was launched in 2011 by Nick Huzar and Arean Van Veelen.

What Can You Sell?

You can sell a lot of items on the platform. Toys, electronics, and furniture are the top categories. I currently have toys, board games, jerseys, shoes, and books listed on OfferUp. Large items like furniture do well because you don’t have to worry about shipping them. They will message you via the app if someone wants to buy something. You two will figure out a safe place to complete the transaction if it’s a local sale. If the item is to be shipped, you ship it. You can find more info about that below.

Costs

There are two options within OfferUp. You have the option for people to pick up the item and the option to ship the item. With the pick-up option, it’s 100% free. If you choose to ship your item, there will be a fee. It’s a minimum of $1.99 or 2.9% of the sale price. If you decide to ship items, you choose a box size for the item. The box size will be the shipping cost that the buyer pays. The prices range from $3.49 to $15.99. You have to provide the box for the item. Once the item sells, you’ll be sent one of the shipping labels. You have three days to send the item. I typically send my items the next business day. Once the buyer receives the item, they have two days to evaluate it. Once they do that, you get paid.

It does not cost anything to list the items. You can list 50 or 500 things, and it will be free to list them. This is another positive about OfferUp.

If you want more sales, you can pay a small fee to bump an item to the top of the search to get more views. More views typically mean that you will get more sales.

The Set Up

Home

You’ll be on the home screen when you open up the app. You can see items that are the newest or closest to you. You can change the settings also to know the cost of the items. Also, you can choose to see which items are available for pick up or shipping. If you tap the three lines at the top left, you can see the different categories that OfferUp has.

Inbox

Next to the home button, you will see a button that says inbox. You can see all the messages you and potential buyers sent out. You also get messages when you receive payment. There’s a notification tab on there too.

Post

The next button you see is a camera that says post. You tap that when you have an item ready to sell on OfferUp.

Selling

The selling button is next. It has two different sections in this area.

For Sale

You can scroll up and down to see every item that you currently have listed for sale on Offerup.

Archived

Next to the for sale tab, you will see the archived area. For some reason, OfferUp does not allow you to delete items. Instead, you can archive them. The archive section shows you everything you listed on the platform that is no longer active. The things that you sold are marked with a sold button on them. The others don’t. They do have a tab beneath them marked unarchive if, for some reason, you want to list the item again. That’s good if you like to keep a record of what you’ve sold on OfferUp.

Account

The last button that you’ll see is account. It has four different sections on it.

Transactions

You can see your purchases and sales in the transactions section. You can also see the different payment and deposit methods you have set up.

Saves

If you have any items that you want to save, they will show up here. You can even go in and create lists. You can also set up search alerts.

Account

This section lets you see your account settings, public profile, and custom profile link. You can also sign up for promote plus and OfferUp premium.

Promote Plus is a paid service that allows you to promote one item at the top of buyers’ feeds for up to a month or a year. You can also swap out the promoted item as much as you want to.

OfferUp Premium is an ad-free version of the app. It costs $3.99 per month.

Help

In the help section, you can find the community center and also community actions.
